Position Description

This work is in support of the Space Launch Systems (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The successful candidate will perform structural strength analysis for both flight and non-flight hardware.

Job duties include development of formal stress analysis packages for structural systems using strength of materials and finite element based methods, interfacing with design engineers to provide inputs to preliminary designs, development and delivery of reports and presentations to management, and collaboration with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware and Ground Support Equipment.

    Basic Qualifications

    Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering or Engineering Mechanics or related field from an ABET-accredited university is preferred with a minimum of:

    • Ph.D., and 4+ years of direct experience
    • Masters 8+ years of direct experience
    • BS and 10+  years of direct experience

    Required Qualifications:

    • At least 10 years' experience in the application of finite element methods and the assessment of failure mechanisms such as rupture, yield, buckling, fatigue and fracture.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Familiarity with NASA standards and MSFC Specifications.

    Other Qualifications

    Desired Skills:

    • Experience of seven or more years working with finite element software: Femap, Patran, NASTRAN, Abaqus, Ansys Workbench, Ansys.
    • Experience with the design and analysis of joints containing mechanical fasteners, adhesives, welds, and composite/metallic interfaces.
